ART NOUVEAU BRISTOL GLASS ANTIQUE TABLE LAMP

English Hand Painted ''Guardian Angel & Little Boy" Scene Bristol Glass Table Lamp dates circa 1910

This Gorgeous Art Glass Lamp is a fine example of Art Nouveau in terms of its whimsical theme and exquisite hand painting executed in bright and graceful color tones. The soft hues of color accentuate the beauty of this hand painted scene.

This Bristol Glass Table Lamp is hand blown and polychrome enamel decorated. It is partially transfer printed and hand painted with a "guardian angel and little boy" scene. Such scenes are typical of the Art Nouveau Period in all art forms. The lamp is quite possibly of English origin and dates approximately 1910. The glass portion of the lamp is mounted to an open work metal base.

The theme of a little boy trying to fetch his hat from the pond as he is being protected by his guardian angel from falling into the water is an evident image of religious myth prominent in Victorian times and how all Christian children were protected from danger unaware to them.

As a theme this would make a very appropriate lamp for a child’s bedroom.

WHAT IS BRISTOL GLASS?

It began production as early as 1740s and continued into the earlier part of the twentieth century. The name Bristol refers to one of the areas in England where the glass was originally made. Other areas of England that produced Bristol are Sunderland, Stourbridge, Newcastle, Chepstow, Warrington and Birmingham. Production is believed to have originated in the Bowles factory in Southwork. Similar glass was also made in France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and in the United States. The glass is usually decorated with bright enameling and gold trim depicting naturalistic art nouveau themes: foliage, birds and flowers. Because of similarities in decoration and quality of research on the subject, it is many times difficult to attribute country of origin or manufacturer to a specific piece.
