This Absolutely Fabulous Pair of Milk Glass “Crucifix” Candlestick Holders is attributed to the Boston & Sandwich Glass Works of The Boston Area and dates circa 1850-1860. They measure 7 1/4” High and are a creamy white. They have octagonal bases with Jesus in full molded relief on the crucifix which has a wood-like graining effect. This pair has a whiter tinge to the glass, whereas Inventory # PFTP000729 has a more smoky gray to the white. The color change according to experts is perhaps attributed to usage and had a tendency to change color from the smoke of the burning candles.

HISTORY OF BOSTON SANDWICH GLASS COMPANY:

The Boston & Sandwich Glass Factories were opened by Deming Jarves in Boston, Massachusetts in 1825 at Factory and Harbor Streets. It operated there until 1864 upon which time it moved to the Cape Cod Area and operated there until 1888.In 1888, Libbey of Toledo, Ohio purchased it. In Cape Cod, it operated as the Cape Cod Glassworks. The factories produced over 30 million dollars worth of glass that permeated the United States by the turn of the century. Indeed it was an extremely successful factory; it thrived on pattern and pressed glass which was loved by the Americans. Today early pieces from the Boston and Sandwich factories are treasured and much sought after by museums and collectors alike; and fetches premium prices. Good early pieces in good condition are considered fairly scarce and can command a good buck; and are cherished and coveted by avid collectors. Definitely an investment!

Of course as we know, there is the Boston Sandwich Museum in Boston which houses and displays many thousands of pieces that were produced by this factory.

CONDITION: Absolutely lovely!
