This Really Fancy Cut Glass Cranberry Overlay Decanter is unsigned; however it has the feel and earmarks of Val St. Lambert, therefore we think that it could possibly be Val St. Lambert. Val St Lambert did cut Brilliant Cut Glass for some American factories during the American Brilliant Period. It was definitely made circa 1900-1920. With the stopper, it measures 9 1/4" Height; without the stopper, it measures 5 1/8” Height. It has a double ring neck which is beautifully cut and the sides are “scoop” cutting to expose the clear part of the crystal. The whole decanter has a very attractive “skirted” appearance.

COMMENT: This Beautiful Cut Glass Decanter With Its "Skirted Appearance" Certainly Could Grace Any Vanity Table And Makes A Wonderful Gift For The One You Love. On the other hand, it is a nice collectionaire piece.

WHAT IS "CUT-TO-CLEAR" OR "OVERLAY" ?

This process of cutting to expose a combination of colors against the basic clear glass is called “cut-to-clear” or “overlay”. This is not the process that is known as “flash”, which is entirely different. “Cut-to-clear” or “overlay” does not come off when washed or used over a period of time, whereas “flash” is easily removed, wears and scratches easily and will show little air bubbles from being applied where you can see the clear glass under the applied color. “Overlay” is a process that is carried out as the glass is being made and hand polished, whereas “flash” is applied over the glass once the temperature of the glass has been reduced and may be easily removed or with time, wears off, depending upon usage and how it is washed. “Overlay” does not wear off. Of course, the price difference is drastic. “Flash” is only a facsimile of the real thing.

CONDITION: There is some cloudiness inside which can be professionally polished out. The stopper, we suspect may not be the original; however it is aesthetically proportional and lends itself an air of elegance to the decanter and fits nicely. At the tip of the stopper there is a very tiny or minute flea bite that can be polished out. Therefore we are selling this item in "as is" condition.
