From research, this tall Jug or Tankard that measures 12” High, is from the H. J. Wood (LTD.) Factory in Burslem, England. This tankard has impressed (on the bottom) “MADE IN ENGLAND” and Number “80” impressed with the number “7” in black. These are the only identifying marks.
We believe that this is an unsigned piece of Charlotte Rhead, who designed for this factory in the late 1920’s to the early 1930’s, because once upon a time some twenty years ago we had a charger/dasher with this pattern that was signed by her with this same pattern. However, even if we do not properly recall, this is still a great piece of English Art Pottery of high caliber. If this piece is from this factory, it would be categorized as “Bursley Ware”. It has a beautiful yellow floral relief with applied handle and beautifully turned body on a matted green ground.
COMMENT: A Truly Great Collector Piece! A Great Decorator Piece as well! This tankard has all the earmarks of a well executed art pottery piece. Not all great art pottery was signed in these earlier years. However through further research, I am certain that this well executed piece can be better identified and eventually attributed with more certainty. So, we are offering this unusual piece at a fraction of the cost that it would be, if it was signed.
CONDITION: Excellent! No damage, no stains and no restoration!
