PRICE: $1,750.00
Truly A Great Rarity! This petite creamer was made by the Leeds Pottery in Yorkshire, England. The factory was first established in 1758 and had various proprietors when it started up production.
Only a small proportion of Leeds wares bear factory marks. In 1820, this factory went bankrupt and work was carried on by various other potters at this same location. This creamer dates 1812. This creamware creamer with a lion spout stands rectangular in shape and has clip corner design. It has two portrait busts in light blue relief as well as embossed acanthus leaves on each panelled corner.
It stands 4 1/2" in Height. One side has the bust of King George III; the other side has that of his son, King George IV (who, at this time, was called Prince Regent prior to his father’s death on Jan. 29th1820 after which he became king) who at the time reigned with his sick father as Prince Regent from 1811-1820. [George III was born May 24th, 1738 and died Jan. 29th, 1820; George IV was born Aug.12th, 1762 and died June 26th, 1830]; [King George III reigned from 1760 -1820; King George IV (after being crowned), reigned from 1820-1830. Queen Charlotte was married to King George III on Sept 8th, 1761; she was born May 19th, 1744 and died Nov. 17th, 1818.
COMMENT: The composition clay body of this creamer is known as “creamware”. However, it is commonly referred to as “Leeds Ware” or “Queensware” by many experts in the field. Technically, it can also be considered as “pearlware”.
The terms: “creamware" and "pearlware” are basically interchangeable. Leedsware basically refers to the location where such pottery was made at the time.
The term “Queensware” basically refers to the time in history in which this kind of clay body was made and refers to the time Queen Charlotte reigned as Queen Consort to King George III in England. Of course as we know from research, King George III had lots of china commissioned for his darling wife at the time. This was very standard custom for royalty of many countries to have commissioned pottery and porcelains for their wives.
This creamer is truly a great rarity and falls into the category of “Historical China” for the connoisseur collector. However, some refer to it as “Commemorative China”, but because of its age and subject matter, it is more correct to refer to it as “Historical China”. This is truly a gem waiting to deserve a place in a great collection or in a museum!
CONDITION: Excellent! There are no restorations!
