This Fabulous Dark Flow Blue Platter was manufactured by Myott & Sons Pottery Factory of Staffordshire, England approximately 1900-1910. (The reason for this deduction is that “Monarch” & “Crumlin” Flow Blue Patterns have the same blank (mold) and were made by Myott & Sons).
It measures 16” Length by 12 1/4” Width by 1 1/4" Depth. The Border is an alternating design of stylized flowers accented by gold gilding over an embossed beaded edge. Such relief or embossed work on pottery or porcelain is typical of the Art Nouveau Period of the Late Victorian Era.
COMMENT: This Wonderful Art Nouveau Flow Blue Platter is a great example of the last era of great Flow Blue in the history of Staffordshire pottery production. This platter, even though it is late flow blue, exhibits flow blue at its best in terms of its design, intensity & richness of color. This last wave of Flow Blue is one to be treasured because it will never again be produced with the same techniques and warmth of personal touch of hand. The quality & whiteness of the pottery with the quality of high glaze on this dark, inky Flow Blue Platter makes this platter a Definite Winner!
Flow Blue of this caliber has a rich history through out Quebec and is and has been treasured for over a century with great zeal. When it is deep, running & intense blue like this, the French refer to it with great ardency as “Bleu Fonce”or “Bleu Courree”.

Of course as we know, most of the cobalt used in producing Flow Blue China was being imported from Germany prior to World War I. Of course, once the war had begun, Germany and England were no longer allies. Consequently cobalt ceased to be exported to the English factories and flow blue had suffered a great downfall and pretty well ceased production.
CONDITION: It is in very good condition except for a very small kiln split 1/4” at the top which is illustrated in our photo; as well at the back near the extreme edge there is a very small chip 1/8” which does not disturb the facial feature of the platter. Whatever minor damages that are mentioned are illustrated in the last three photos. (If you wish to have a close-up image to show better detail, download and enlarge on your computer). Such tiny damage does not greatly disturb the value of this platter. This is considered premium flow blue for “late flow blue”. This is yummy flow blue! Great Intensity Of Color!
Therefore we are offering this great English flow blue platter in "as is" condition. Note that much flow blue found in today's marketplace and being offered is either very poor color intensity or has been restored.
HISTORY OF MYOTT & SONS
Myott, Son & Co. Limited originally operated from the Alexander Pottery in Stoke, Staffordshire, in the North of England. It was a family run business producing earthenware from 1898. Run by two brothers, Ashley and Sydney Myott, the company soon had to expand to meet growing demand. They moved to the Brownfield Works in Cobridge, just North of Stoke-on-Trent and then extended the operation to the adjacent Upper Hanley Pottery in 1925.
There was a fire at the factory in 1949 in which many of the office files were destroyed including vital pattern information. This basically led to the company’s demise.
This factory had a great reputation throughout Canada especially in Quebec where Flow Blue China was an addiction. Regardless, almost every home had to have a Flow Blue Dinner Service to be presented as Sunday’s best and for special occasions. One must remember that in order to acquire a complete dinner service in flow blue, the cost was equivalent to at least three to four months of earnings/salary for the more affluent household or rich merchant in the village.
