This Very Unique Porcelain Egg Holder Is Definitely Of German Origin. It dates approximately 1880s and measures 7” Diameter by 4 1/4" Height. It was made during the Art Nouveau Period, when animals were the subject of many potteries and porcelains in terms of decoration. It was not uncommon for porcelains of this time period to be unmarked.
The porcelain in this egg holder is very dense and very white with gold gilding outlining a country farm yard scene that depicts foxes chasing chickens and hens. The animals on the egg holder have absolutely fabulous embossing or relief work. It has intertwining twigs outlining each animal on each panel, as well as an oval twig handle. All total, there are six panels with six different scenes.
COMMENT: This Is Most Definitely A Conversation Piece For The Breakfast Table! Definitely Reminiscent Of The Country Life Style!
A LITTLE REMINISCENCE
Just imagine what it must have been like living in the 1880’s on a farm where life was very simple as depicted in this scene! The chickens clucking as the fox pounced on its prey and the farmer cursing the foxes as he was getting out his rifle and beckoning his blood hounds to pursue the foxes.
This is definitely a rarity in terms of an egg holder and would be considered a choice collector piece.
CONDITION: Excellent! There is no rubbing of the gold gilding, no chips, no cracks, no stains and no restoration.
