PRICE: $175.00

This Porcelain Vase was made in Japan during the latter part of the "Meiji Period" (circa 1868-1912). This piece dates circa 1900-1910. The scene is of two geisha girls pondering their thoughts. The vase measures 12” High and has the typical five colours used on Kutani decoration. The vase has two Foo Dog handles. Of course, as we all know, all Kutani is completely hand painted, as is the case with this piece. The scenes are different on each side.

COMMENT: As with many of the early Oriental porcelains, initially many were shipped outside their home countries for monetary value and it was not until the worlds’ great exhibitions started that they drew world acclaim and began to be seen in a different light being that as objects d’art or art objects rather than monetary objects.

HISTORY OF KUTANI PORCELAIN

A brief history about Kutani is always of interest! Kutani has been produced for nearly 350 years, initially starting in Yamanaska, Japan around 1650’s.

It is basically divided into three periods: (1) First Period, called Ku-Kutani, circa 1655-1657; (2) Revival Kutani Period, circa 1807 and (3) Meiji Period circa 1868-1912.

The actual word Kutani means Nine Valleys and is the name of a village near Yamanaska in Japan. Consequently, the pottery and porcelain made here was eventually named Kutani.

The Kutani porcelains always used five colors: red, blue, yellow, purple and green and generally used clear overglaze to seal and finish the product. This process in Japan is called Nishikide.

Although, Kutani has been made since 1650’s, it was not until the Vienna Exposition of 1873, that these fine hand painted porcelains were first exhibited to the world.

CONDITION: This vase is in great condition except for one handle, which has a very minor repair to the tip of the tail of the foo dog, right side, when the vase is facing front. This conditional problem is illustrated in the photos. Therefore this porcelain vase is being offered to you in "as is" condition.
