J.& M.P. Bell & Co. Scottish Antique Porcelain Vase C. 1881-1928

This Absolutely Gorgeous Parian Ware Vase measures 12 3/4” High and has a 6" Diameter center. It was manufactured by J. & M.P. Bell & CO., Glasgow Pottery, Glasgow, Scotland and dates approximately 1900. This location operated from 1842-1928. They were renowned for their superior quality of Parian ware and other earthenwares.

This vase has a very silky or satin-like texture glaze of a soft blue ground with Grecian figures exquisitely hand painted. Their garments are of intense royal colors of purple, yellow and green outlined with black. The front has three figures; the reverse side has two figures.Each side of the vase has a different scene as is visible in the top two photos.

COMMENT: All these characters refer to Greek Mythology. This theme may have arrived from an inspiration of James’ travels abroad, as was commonplace for many potters at the time. Many potters traveled abroad to get inspiration for designs for their potteries as well as to discover different ingredients for their clay ingredients so that they could try to create a more superior product than their neighboring pottery company; in addition to drumming up business abroad. Whatever the case, this vase is most certainly a great creation and a true piece of art. This vase is a supreme example of this factory’s workmanship and lives up to the factory’s reputation. It could be considered a rarity!

CONDITION: This vase is in great condition except for a minor hairline crack on the vase, at the top, just underneath the lip, going south, that measures approximately 1 3/4" in length, as is illustrated in photo.

This little hairline is barely noticeable unless brought to attention. In reference to the piece and quality of the piece, this is considered minor. Therefore this vase is being offered to you in an "as is" condition.
