STAFFORDSHIRE ANTIQUE IRONSTONE SLOP OR WASTE JAR

This Adorable Art Nouveau Slop Jar is unmarked Staffordshire, England. This is authentically antique [NOT reproduction!]. It has soft green flowers and blue roses with a soft hue of yellow transfer printed to the medium of “ironstone” with little dashes of hand painting to accentuate the rose motif. It measures 11” Height by 11” Diameter. This also has its strainer. The strainers are usually missing or badly stained and chipped from usage. Slop jars are considered rare today and are very collectable.

COMMENT: Many of the smaller factories in England at the time did not always mark their wares, especially if the products were made for their home country and not always made for export. Of course there was no running water in the 1870-1880’s period; consequently many such products had to be made for home country use and were not always stamped by the manufacturer at the time because of the huge and immediate demand for such household products. Such lavatory products certainly must have been a cash cow for many factories at the time.

Such an item as this, for lavatory use was called a “slop jar” or “night soil bucket”. The mate to it would have been the "thunder pot” or "chamber pot”. A great collectionaire piece! It may join your prized “Ironstone Collection of Staffordshire Transferware China”. Many people use them for floral arrangements or simply for dry flowers. Definitely a touch of “Art Nouveau”!

CONDITION: Absolutely Mint! There are no cracks, no stains, no chips, and no restorations. I repeat! The strainers are very often missing.
