This Gorgeous Art Nouveau Dark Inky Flow Blue Antique Chamber/Thunder Pot was manufactured by J & G Meakin Pottery Company, Hanley, England approximately 1900. The pattern name chosen by Meakin for this floral design/motif was “Moderna”. The cartouche carries the number 409774.
This Chamber Pot measures 9” Diameter by 11” (handle to front) by 5 1/4” High. The floral transfer decoration is all over the body of the piece including the handle. This pattern is accented with sponge gold gilding. The medium for this transfer is an earthenware/pottery commonly referred to as “semi porcelain” (see article on home page link: Media section).
COMMENT: An Absolutely Fabulous Collectionaire Piece! The quality of Flow Blue of this Chamber Pot is in the “Choice/Superior” Category in the fact that it is extremely “inky/running” and is very dark with no tinge of gray. The blue is very “blue-blue”! Unfortunately some dealers pass off “gray-blue” transfer print as great flow blue for the same price as really “ fabulous or good” flow blue. As any great collector/dealer knows...good or great flow blue should NOT be “gray” in color, but should have “intensity in its color of blue”.
CONDITION: This English Antique Flow Blue Thunder Pot is in super condition except for a very tiny chip on the footrim which is illustrated in the last photo! The tiny chip is really so small that it is not worth mentioning. There is no staining, no cracks or restoration!
