GEORGE JONES ENGLAND SPANISH FESTIVITIES PATTERN PINK TRANSFERWARE VINTAGE IRONSTONE PLATE 10 1/2" DIAMETER, CIRCA 1924

This unique and very attractive plate was manufactured by the George Jones factory of Crescent Pottery, Stoke in the Staffordshire District of England which existed from 1907-1957 at this address.

The plate is pink transferware on a heavy earthenware body and is impressed for the year date of 1924; and measures 10 1/2" Diameter. The pattern is “Spanish Festivities”. This maker, as we all know, is world renowned for his majolica wares. The quality of this transfer print is absolutely impeccable!

COMMENT: This plate is charming and can comfortably fit into a country setting as well as a more formal setting! It certainly is worthy of an Ironstone Transferware Collection!

The pattern SPANISH FESTIVITIES depicts a black subject, the coachman, and horse drawn carriage of the white gentry, possibly in New Orleans. The white gentry are rather staunch and proper in their attire, possibly on their way to Mardi-Gras as the pattern name seems to suggest…Spanish Festivities. The ladies definitely look like Southern Bells clad in their long frilly dresses.

This pattern has also been produced in a very deep intense inky blue transfer, slightly flowing, bordering on “flow blue”. Some twenty years ago, when I was specializing in “Blue & White” and “Flow Blue”, I had possessed a magnificent 18” Length dark blue platter in this pattern, of course made by the same maker.

This pink is also referred to as “Vieux Rose” by the French, meaning “Old Rose”. Sounds Romantic? The scene is certainly from the “Romantic Period” of Staffordshire Transfer Ware. It has the same flavor and quality as that of the 1840-1860’s Period of Transfer Printed Wares. The quality and workmanship of this factory is exquisite.

The whiteness of the body gives the beautiful pink that extra edge to pronounce the beautiful romantic scene that this plate depicts.

CONDITION: Excellent! The transferware is of top quality! There are no glaze bubbles nor bad transfer slips.  There are no chips, no stains, no fork/knife scratches nor restorations.
