This Great Imari Covered Vegetable was manufactured by The Keeling Co., Dale Hall Works, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. It measures 8 3/4" Diameter by 5" High. From handle to handle, it measures 11 1/4". The trade mark logo “Lysol Ware” dates approximately 1886-1891. The factory existed from 1886-1936.
The shape is interestingly ornate with lots of gold gilding applied to the finial, handles and fluted edge or rim. Of course this was intended to accentuate the bold and beautiful cobalt and red enameled colors with the green leaves. An influence of the Orient is obvious in the floral design and as is stated in the pattern name being “Tokio”. It is Transfer Print with dashes of hand painting underglaze.
COMMENT: A Fabulous Service Piece To Compliment Any Dinner Presentation!
CONDITION: It is in Great Condition, except for the little stain which has occurred as a result of a factory stilt mark. The glaze was skipped in the firing at the point of resting in the kiln which is one of the stilt points (There are always three resting points (stilt marks) which are equilaterally spaced to form as we know a triangle on which the piece rests on stilts in the kiln during the firing process). In actuality this is really not damage. Because of glaze skip, and the fact of the stilt point being on the inside meant that any vapor or moisture from food would have caused this. Because of our high resolution, this little stain appears to be more serious looking than what it actually is.
HISTORY OF KEELING COMPANY: “LYSOL WARE” TRADEMARK
Part of the cartouche (mark) depicting a kneeling nude potter and reading Late Mayers 1790 actually belonged to the extensive works at Dale Hall which was founded in 1790 by Joseph Stubbs, a successful manufacturer of earthenware from 1822-5, who died in 1836. He was succeeded in 1843 by Messrs. Thomas, John & Joshua Mayer, who from 1855 traded as Mayer Brothers & Elliot; from them the works passed through the firms of Mayer & Elliot, Liddle, Elliot, & Co., Bates, Elliot & Co., Bates, Walker & Co., and Bates, Gildea & Walker to the firm of Gildea & Walker 1881-1886. “Lysol Ware” was also marked in the cartouche as a logo used by the Keeling Company for several decades.
It was not unusual for potters to try to establish an early date, to try to give their wares some sense of history and value. The occupiers of the Dale Hall Pottery Works used the date "1790" which was the date the works was first built by Joseph Stubbs.
The wording "LATE MAYERS" refers to Thomas, John & Joshua Mayer who operated from 1843.
