This Unique Handled Cut Glass Nappy was made during the American Brilliant Period and dates approximately 1900-1910. It does not carry a signature; however we believe it to be of American origin more so than Canadian. This unusual design is from what is known as the “Intaglio” designs from the “Naturals” period of American Brilliant Period cut glass. This nappy measures 6” Diameter; from the tip of the handle to the front, it measures 7 1/2" Wide. The Depth is 1 1/2". It has absolutely fabulous cutting and engraving of floral motifs and cross banding at the bottom with Harvard design and strawberry banded edge.
COMMENT: This Little Brilliant Cut Glass Nappy is Definitely A Winner! It Accurately matches this description. There should be little hesitation putting this little rarity in your collection! This piece definitely exhibits great craftsmanship in terms of elaborate detail and precise cutting!
This piece has great clarity of blank and very unique pattern as well as rim work. Such designs began in order to give a different feel and look to cut glass other than the more heavy and gothic designs which many companies supplied at the time. Such designs were lighter and frillier in look and feel, with a more feminine appeal other than the heavier more gothic touch. After all, it was men who were doing all the designs and cutting at the time. Factories still had to appeal this glass to the women of America and the World and we must not bore the women of America. Consequently, glass cutters from various factories decided now was time for something innovative, new and different with a more mass appeal and decided to inject such pieces into their creations. Of course these new designs took off with instant success and today are in great demand, of course depending upon how well executed these pieces are.
CONDITION: EF condition. Great condition except that there is a minor chip on the rim work nearing the handle. Sorry there is no photo available at this time to depict this minor damage. Upon photo taking, it was overlooked at the time. Photo will be available at a later date or upon request The blank has great clarity!
