HISTORY OF GORHAM
Jabez Gorham started Gorham Silver Co. 1831 in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. In 1875 he brought his son on board to join him in his extremely prosperous business. By 1875 he had over 400 employees and in 1890 he had purchased a campus over 30 acres in Providence. Now this was an extremely big operation. In 1905, renowned architect, Stanford White designed a building for him on Fifth Ave. New York City. Gorham is world renowned for their sterling as well as his cut glass. This factory was most certainly ready for the Great World Exhibitions that took place in Philadelphia 1876, known as the Centennial Exposition, and the others that followed. Out of all the eminent factories that produced cut glass and silver, Gorham is still in business supplying the world the best of the best when it comes to crystal and sterling. As we know many factories went under as early as 1915 and by 1930’s, most were closed. He is still one of the very few who survived after all those years.
CONDITION: Very good! There is a very tiny minute chip to the base that can be easily polished. Certainly not detrimental to such an excellent piece! Note that the photo shows a lot of surface scratching. In reality this does not show as badly. However someone obviously had used it as a salad bowl. This may also be polished out. There are no other damages.
