Classy, Tasteful and Unique are three adjectives that describe this lighter to a “T”. It is not gas, rather regular lighter fluid. It is silver plated on a copper base metal.
COMMENT: This Unusual Shape Ronson Table Lighter was in its time a Fashion Statement amongst the affluent and upward mobility. Smoking and cigarette lighters were looked at as a sign of accomplishment and heightened social status.
HISTORY of RONSON:
Ronson has a long and illustrious history of producing high quality cigar and cigarette lighters as well as stylish smoking accessories and figural items for home, office and commercial use. The Company was created by Louis V. Aronson in 1886, and first opened in New York City. The following year it moved to Newark N.J. to stay and today it is in Somerset, N.J.
In addition, the Company's consumer packaged products are marketed in Canada through Ronson Corporation of Canada, Ltd. ("Ronson-Canada"), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Company. RCPC and Ronson-Canada together comprise Ronson Consumer Products. Ronson Corporation ceased operations in 1980. Once disposable lighters came into vogue and smoking began to be a no-no, the decline began for this company. The etiquette of smoking was now no longer associated with the affluent and sophisticated but rather as an addiction that lead to lung cancer. Consequently demand for such lighters began to wane.
CONDITION: Excellent! There is no wear to the silver plating and shines up nicely.
