This Transfer Printed Blue & White Plate was manufactured by C.T. Maling & Sons (Ltd.), A. & B. Ford Potteries, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. This company operated from 1859-1963. This plate dates approximately 1940-1950.
The plate measures 11” Diameter and has a charming transfer printed blue and white romantic scene as central theme framed by a snowflake and vine border. This is a variation of the original transfer prints that were produced in 1840’s by many British manufacturers. The pattern of this transfer is unidentified at this time.
COMMENT: Maling is a very renowned potter of majolica type pottery plates, dashers, jugs, teapots, etc. The colors they used were of a rich, bold and vibrant blue, yellow, orange, green and purple. Their wares are held in esteem by avid collectors today and prices are escalating at a rapid pace
This is an absolutely high quality transfer print comparable to that of the 1840-1860 period. The “Romantic Staffordshire” transfer prints of the period always accentuated pastoral scenes, castles, always had farm animals, such as cows and sheep usually accompanied by little dogs, children and young ladies clad in long fancy dresses. Always quite charming and romantic!
This charming blue and white plate can certainly hold its own in any blue and white collection even though it is of a more current vintage than that of the 1840’s period.
CONDITION: Excellent! Absolutely flawless transfer!
