JOHNSON BROS IMARI VINTAGE ART DECO CUPS AND SAUCERS

This Set of 4 Imari Cups & Saucers was manufactured by the Johnson Bros. Factory, Staffordshire, England and dates approximately 1935. The cartouche (backstamp) was used from 1915-1935.

These cups & saucers are hand painted in polychrome Imari colors and have 4 nicely executed alternating panels of petite flowers on a rich cobalt ground with a larger orange floral on the other 4 panels. They are executed on a “semi-porcelain” medium.

NOTE: Each set of cups & saucers is sold separately and is priced at $35.00. (A set = one cup + one saucer).

COMMENT: These Colorful Cups & Saucers can easily add vitality to any breakfast table!

CONDITION: Very good! There is no wear to the gold gilding or the hand painting.

BRIEF HISTORY OF JOHNSON BROS. FACTORY

The factory of Johnson Bros. began in 1883 by two brothers, namely Alfred and Fredrick who was later in 1888 joined by the other two brothers, namely Henry and Robert at the Charles Street Works, Hanley, Staffordshire, England. After 1930, the pottery operated at the Trent Works, Hanley, England. In order to popularize the business name and gain more sales, Robert in 1896 opened a retail-importing company in New York.

The Charles St. Works operated from 1883 up to 1930 after which time it operated at Trent Potteries until 1968. In 1968 it was taken over by the Wedgwood Group which was incidentally the fate of many of the British potteries.

Johnson Bros has had a long history in Canada as well. Their wares were respected and cherished by many Canadians since the turn off the twentieth century. Another little note of interest is that in 1947 Johnson Bros. acquired a controlling interest in the Canadian china business of Sovereign Potteries Ltd., Hamilton, Ontario along with its factory.
