This Fabulous Rich Dark Blue & White Transferware Platter was manufactured by Royal Cauldon Factory, Staffordshire, England approximately 1930 and has a measurement of 11” Length by 9 1/2" Width. The intensity of this dark blue borders on almost being categorized as “Flow Blue” which some dealers say it is, however I prefer to say “dark blue & white”
The pattern is named “Native” and is categorized in the “Romantic” Category of Staffordshire “Blue & White” Transfer Ware. The depiction is that of typical country life possibly English countryside. The scene has a rustic charm that shows two ladies and two gentlemen engaging in conversation as two horses rest beside them as two people sail bye in a little boat. In the sky there are three doves that overlook a country cottage, river and an arched bridge in the foreground.
The border is known as “Passion Flower” which was originally produced by Goodwin & Harris of Crown Works, Staffordshire, England between 1831-1838 when they produced the dark blues on pearlware and ironstone. They named all their prints that had this border “The Passion Border Series”.

HISTORY OF ROYAL CAULDON FACTORY
The Cauldon Factory was first established by Ridgway, Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. 1862 and continued until 1904 at the Cauldon Works, Staffordshire England. From 1904-1905 it was renamed Cauldon Ltd. and operated at Cauldon Place from 1905-1920. From 1920-1962 it operated as Cauldon Potteries Ltd. In 1962 Poutney & Co. Ltd took over the works.
Of course the cartouche marks changed and varied throughout this time period as is a commonality amongst potters who incorporate or change partnerships.
Because of the earlier Ridgway association and history with Canada, Cauldon and subsequent factories had a great reputation in Canada for almost a century which has lead to many pieces being imported into warehouses in Montréal, Quebec and London, Ontario. Canadians have a reverence and great respect for this factory and have never been let down by the quality of its production over the years and to this day speak highly of the Cauldon factories of England.
