The platter measures 18” Length by 13” Width by 2 1/4” Depth. The mold work for this platter is exquisite; the porcelain is very heavy and durable as is seen in the photo illustration. The plates have four different elk scenes. There are 8 accompanying plates of which each 2 plates have the same animal. The plates measure 8 1/2” Diameter. The platter has very ornate shell scroll corners with gracefully curved edges. The central theme is that of an elk followed by numerous elk in the background against a body of water, pink sky and wooded area.
COMMENT: Class Galore! This Wonderful Art Nouveau Game Set Is Reminiscent Of The Victorian Era In Its Exuberance Of Wealth & Class. It was customary for the wealthy classes to serve their game upon special platters and plates when feasting with honored guests. However, today such sets are collected more for their beauty and display rather than for functionality. Such A Set Would Make A Fantastic Display In Ones Dining Room!
CONDITION: Excellent! The platter is in exquisite condition! There is no wear to the sponge gold gilding. There are no knife or fork scratches. It has no chips, no cracks, no stains nor restoration!
As for the plates, they are in excellent shape as well, however some do show a little loss of the sponge gold gilding which is normal for porcelain of this vintage especially when they were originally intended for use at the table. After all, these pieces are approximately 130 years old.
