This Attractive Blown Glass Sherry Decanter has the “Thistle & Floral” motif exquisitely engraved or etched on a paneled and footed blank. The process of engraving such a design on thin blown glass blanks by copper wheel is referred to as “Muslin Glass”.
The Mushroom Stopper has a pontiff at the apex and is also blown. Although not crystal, the blank is very delicate and thin which attests to the dainty quality of this decanter. It measures 11” High with the stopper; without the stopper, it measures 9 1/4” High and it has a Center Diameter of 4 1/2" with a Base Pedestal Diameter of 3 5/8”. The decanter has a polished pontiff at the bottom attesting that it is free blown and is not pressed in a mold.
Mouslin or Muslin Glass was executed in England, France, America and other countries for nearly several centuries and during the 1920s was held in high esteem by connoisseurs of glass as being very refined glass that was tasteful for dainty occasions. As the gentlemen retrieved to the library, the ladies retrieved to the drawing room for an after-dinner sherry or cognac.
COMMENT: A Fancy Decanter for a Fancy Dinner Occasion!
CONDITION: The decanter itself is in excellent condition except for the stopper. The base section of the stopper has some roughness, minor chipping, to the edge of the plug-in part of the stopper. Failure to include a photo of this minor damage was an oversight on part of our photographer at time of photo session. Therefore we are now offering this item at a reduced price in an "as is" condition.
