HISTORY OF ARTIST: JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER

Who is this artist? Well, Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London, England, April 23, 1775. He was a famous English “Romantic Period” landscape artist, known for his oils but regarded as one of the founders of English watercolor landscape painting.

When he was 15, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, a rare honor. In 1779 he was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. It was at the same time when the French Revolution began with the storming of the Bastille; and the same time that George Washington was elected the first president of the United States. In 1772, we saw the abolition of the French Monarchy; and in 1793 was the execution of Louis XVI; and War broke out between Britain and France and the Louvre was first established as a national art gallery. In 1802, when he was 27 years old, he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. With all of these turbulent events simultaneously happening in history, we could not have had a better artist to paint such restful scenes as Turner to see tranquility in natures’ beauty in a romantic way. After all, it was the “Romantic Period” in art at this time in history.
