Both pieces carry the family crest for Scottish clansman. It is a Scottish tartan pattern with OBAN written for the family clansman. The pattern of tartan is Oban which is marked in gold gilding on the side of both sugar and creamer. This rich family crest pattern was probably made for the Canadian Maratime marketplace, specifically Nova Scotia where there was a large segment of the original population immigrated from Scotland. Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans originated in woven cloth, now used in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, the highland tartans were associated with regions or districts, rather than by any specific clan.
