HISTORY OF MINTON FACTORIES
The Minton Factory has been established for over two centuries in the Stoke area of Staffordshire District, England. In 1765, Thomas Minton was born in Shrewsbury, England. After completing his education, he went to work at the Thomas Turner’s Caughley porcelain factory. The Minton family avidly collected English, French, Persian, and Oriental porcelain. Thomas Minton’s passion for pottery and porcelain led him to seek apprenticeships with Josiah Spode, Josiah Wedgwood, and John Adams. After spending several years working throughout England as an engraver, he decided to open a small porcelain factory in Stoke-on-Trent, England. In 1793, Thomas Minton partnered with William Pownall and Joseph Poulson and began building his factory.
The reputation of this factory is one of supreme standards that originated with Thomas Minton 1793. He was born 1765 and died 1836. His sons and family members continued the business with the same standards. He was one of the most eminent fathers of British Pottery & Porcelain. Their standards were so high that they at points in time had threatened the Sevres Factories of France and Dresden Factories of Germany in terms of their various developments in Pate-Sur-Pate, Parian Ware, and other special developments in production of specialized pottery and porcelains. Part of the Mintons’ success was that they were always innovative in their creations and ingredients.
They traveled extensively to all parts of the world to gain insight into production of different wares and many of their patterns were taken or inspired by pottery & porcelain creations in other parts of the world. The Orient especially influenced many of their designs and was an aid to clay compositions and ingenious ingredients. In the 1850s, they again gained notoriety for their famous majolica wares. The Great Exhibition of 1851 was host to many of their fabulous creations. Mintons are world renowned for their quality and creations over the years; many pieces are highly sought. Minton only hired the best artists, designers and sculpturers that money could buy. This is a reputation that has carried through to today. Presently today they are now part of the Royal Doulton Group.
