BRILLIANT CUT GLASS OBLONG SERVING DISH, C. 1905

This Unique Oblong Shape Brilliant Period Cut Glass Serving Dish does not carry a signature but was probably made by Clapperton, who is Canadian and dates 1905. It measures 11 1/2" Length by 5 3/4" Width by 3 1/4" Depth or Height. It has strawberry diamond cutting in the bottom with zipper cutting up the sides with a large16 point hobstar at each end containing a smaller 16 point hobstar within a 16 point hobstar on either side as we ascend to the rim of the bowl. This is typical of Clapperton’s work. The clarity and cutting is typical for his blanks. This piece was purchased near Desoronto, Ontario, where his factory was located at the time of his production.

The Sheer Brilliance of This Brilliant Cut Glass Oblong Bowl and the whereabouts it was found leads us to believe it more than likely is from his factory; besides many of his pieces seem to have a “feel” or an “air” about them setting them apart from other Canadian factories. Of course as we now know many factories did not mark or sign their pieces before leaving the factories. Being Canadian, when we find many pieces of cut glass here, many times they are of Canadian origin regardless if they have a signature or not.

Once one has begun to have an educated or trained “eye and hand” for the “look and feel” of brilliant cut glass and become familiar with the work of certain factories, often times you can attribute a piece of glass to a specific factory with reasonably good certainty. This does not happen over night; this is a developed sense that comes with becoming familiar with many patterns and with the work of many factories as well as actually feeling or touching and looking at the glass with a very astute eye. This kind of glass, brilliant, actually “speaks” to you… as the saying goes. It definitely makes the heart pump faster, especially if it is a “super duper” piece of unique shape and cutting… there is always that special piece that sooner or later will appear from out of nowhere when you least expect it. Then you begin to talk to yourself…”I must have it! How can I get this piece? Always go with your initial “gut” feeling; normally when you do not, you end up regretting and this is not good! Then your emotions sometimes overrule your rationality. This is when you shuffle your bill money or grocery money. Ha! Ha! We are all the same… insanely crazy when we find a piece of this brilliant glass that speaks to us. Yes, it is definitely an addiction but fortunately not fatal, however on occasion, it may put a dent into the pocket book. Always remember at the end of the day, you have to live with yourself!

CONDITION: EF condition except that there is one very minute or very tiny internal flake near one of the saw tooth at the rim. There is no other discernible damage.
