This Fabulous Tantalus Cordial Set is of British origin and was manufactured approximately 1860-1870. It is exquisite in workmanship and design. All the stemware is blown crystal as well as the two cordial/liqueur decanters. There are 3 cordials missing and two decanters missing. It is a known fact that to find an entirely complete set with everything in tact is exceedingly rare and difficult to find.

The case/box is need of some restoration (for further details of condition see bottom “CONDITION” section at foot of page). The box/case measures 12 3/4" Length by 9 5/8” Width by 10 3/4" Height.

The wood work is an inlay combination of fruitwood with walnut and mahogany. The box/case has a serpentine front. The brass work is executed in an Oriental motif.

COMMENT: These Tantalus Sets Were Originally Made For The Homes of The Gentry During Georgian & Victorian Times. Such Elegance Was Always Found in The Homes of The Aristocratic/Bourgeoisie. These always were made with a lock and key in order that the servants did not get into the booze. If not found on the dining room sideboard, such a set would be found in the library such that the gentlemen after having fashionably dined would abode to the library for a little cognac or sherry and a good cigar as their lady counterparts would abode to the drawing room or music room to discuss perhaps embroidery or other typical lady-like things of the Victorian era.

CONDITION: There are two small decanters and three cordial stemware missing. There are no chips on any of the crystal decanters or stemware. The Case however needs some minor restoration. Over the years a little split has occurred on the lid section of the box to the left top side and some of the inlay at the front top is missing; in addition to the left on top some of the brass has curled upward. Other than that, everything else is in tact. The hinges on both doors is in excellent condition as well as the hinge on the top portion of the cover/lid. The lock is fully functional with an original key that functions well. Overall, the entire set is in very good condition.

SIDE NOTE:  Condition and scarcity are crucial to pricing such a treasure. These factors were taken into consideration while pricing this item.
