This Attractive Flanged/Rimmed Wall Hanging Bowl was made by Petrius Regout, Societe Ceramaique, Maastricht, in Holland. This is a “blue & white” transfer ware flanged or rimmed bowl that was specifically made to hang on the wall (see two holes at the back on the foot rim). The bowl measures 9” Diameter. It dates approximately 1920-1940.
The Scene is entitled “Chasse Au Lion”. translated, it means “Chase of the Lion”. It is a type of faience earthenware with a beautiful glaze over the transfer print. This blue and white is a latter version of the English factory, Spode who produced hunting scenes from 1805-1820.
COMMENT: This lovely blue & white transferware bowl is certainly worthy of a good blue and white collection. Of course, we as “blue and white” collectors always strive for that novelty scene in our collection that stands out; and on the other hand, compliments what we already have.
Maastricht is a city in Holland that had various pottery factories located in it. Their wares were known as Maastricht Earthenware. The most renowned factory was that of Petrius Regout & Co., which was later renamed to the Sphinx Works, Societe Ceramique and Masa. These were three factories in different parts of Maastricht City
The “father” of Maastricht Earthenware was Petrius Regout, who started a factory in 1836.
Societie Ceramaque officially was founded in 1863. At the time, they were the biggest Dutch industry and dominated the Dutch market and had a great amount of export to other European countries and the United States as well. The caliber of work of these factories was so superb that it rivaled many of the English factories at the time for the market place. They produced great amounts of transfer ware and became big competitors of the English factories with this product. Their Transfer Wares and Flow Blues were as good as, if not better than some of the English factories.
By 1880-1930, “Maastricht” was one of the biggest exporters in the world. However, as with many factories in England, this Holland factory got gobbled up by other factories and finally ceased operation in 1968.
CONDITION: This blue and white wall hanging bowl is in very condition except for a minor staining to the upper left which looks more serious in the photo than in actuality. There are no damages or restoration.
