J.C.S & CO. FOLEY CHINA ANTIQUE PORCELAIN DESSERT SET

This 16 Piece Porcelain Dessert Set was manufactured by a Staffordshire company bearing the initials “J.C.S & Co.” and trade mark “Foley China”. The pattern name is “Ancre”. It dates approximately 1910-1925.

The Set consists of 16 pieces which includes 4 Cups & 4 Saucers; 6 Dessert Plates; Creamer & Slop Jar/Waste Bowl. It is all hand painted on a porcelain medium. The design is six alternating roses at the outer edge of the border that suspend alternating garlands with two petite roses in each garland all of which is outlined by  black “Greek key” work  at the border’s edge.

The Tea/Dessert Plates measure 6 3/4” Diameter; the Saucers measure 5 1/2” Diameter; the Cups measure 3 1/2” Diameter from handle to front by 2 3/4” High; the Creamer measures 4 1/4” Diameter from handle to lip; the Slop Jar/Waste Bowl measures 4 7/8” Diameter by 3 1/4" High.

COMMENT: This little partial Porcelain Dessert Set is very attractive and is of great quality. Just great for an afternoon tea & dessert on the patio!

COMMENT ABOUT FACTORY HISTORY:

These specific initials are difficult to attribute to any one specific factory. The trade mark “Foley China” was used by a number of different factories. If one checks Geoffrey Godden’s “Encyclopedia of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks”, he or she will admit that the trade marks and initials are confusing and are not clarified by Godden. There were no clarifications on line for these initials (J.C. S & Co.) together with the trade mark “Foley China”. Should any of our expert readers or researchers be able to clarify these marks with certainty, an email with a copy of the research included would be appreciated.

CONDITION: Excellent with exception to the Slop Jar/Waste Bowl! As is illustrated in the photo, there is a chip that measures approximately 1/4" Long. This can be restored professionally.
