HISTORY OF CAMEO ART GLASS

Cameo Art Glass was made in England, France and the United States during the Art Nouveau Period or Movement which dates between circa 1880-1920. Regardless of country of manufacture, all cameo art glass is highly desirable and collectible and prices of such pieces are constantly escalating in value.

WHAT IS CAMEO ART GLASS?

Well, “It is glass of one layer covered, usually by casing, with one or more layers of contrasting colors. The outer layers are acid-etched, carved, cut, or engraved to produce a design that stands out from the background. The first cameo glasses were made by the ancient Romans. The genre was revived in England and, to a lesser extent, in America in the late 19th century.” [Quotation taken from Web Glossary]

Another quotation from Web Glossary is: “It is a multi-layered glass which has a picture carved into it, as layers. Colored layers form the contrasts of the picture, and then the picture is raised above the surrounding surface. It is normally seen as a carving where there is more than one colored layer of glass. Carving is done using a cutting wheel or hydrofluoric acid, leaving quality cameo glass.”

CONDITION: Fine condition except for very minor rubbing to the satin finish; this is normal for the age of the vase.
