This Fabulous Beer Stein measures 8 3/4” High and has a Base Diameter of 6". Although carrying no factory stamp, this great beer stein was made in France. It is a porcelain from the old RCAF base in Marville in France, 30 km from Virton, Saint Mard in Belgium. It is of French manufacture, judging from the whiteness and composition of its very “Paris Porcelain” porcelain-like appearance.
This stein has marked: “OFFICER’S MESS, WING, ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE PRO PACE ARMATI MARVILLE FRANCE”. It depicts C.F. 104 Star Fighter (also known as the “Widow Maker”) atop in pewter casting on the lid. The pewter top is made by H. Schmidt Ges Gesch Koblenz of German manufacture. The manufacture of this porcelain stein is Pre-1970. The front has a great crown up over the word WING.
It was the Canadian Air Base, part of NATO based in France in the late 1960-1970 period. The stein has a great terrace base trimmed in flashy regal gold gilding as well as blue and red enamel detail.
COMMENT: The bottom inside has a wonderful lithophane depicting a semi nude lady exhibiting her curvaceous body, bodacious breasts and long sensuous legs with a very revealing dress that hides very little and leaves little to the imagination. It is suggestive to the drunken army officer who has arrived to the bottom of his beer that perhaps he should go out and visit a bordello for extra curricular activity after having been on the defense all day defending his country and now I ask you, will he be defending his honor?
Apparently from research, which was not easy to come by, these were not manufactured for general sale to the public as commemorative items; rather they were made to be used only in the officers’ mess halls and were made in limited quantity. Apparently upon the officers’ departure, each was given one of these steins as a prestigious souvenir of their events in Marville, France. Such steins are definitely a great military collectible, and certainly can be an asset to your collection if you like significant items relating to history.
