This Charming Blue & White Transferware Plate measures 10 1/2" Diameter and was made in Maruta, Japan and dates approximately 1940’s. Kasuga Ware was a trade name used by the manufacturer. The pattern name is Chatham. The plate has a sensuous spray of roses as its central theme that is bordered by cross hatching at the edge (of the well) which is encompassed by a 1 1/2" wide border that consists of four rose sprigs which is finished with a scroll and scalloped edge.
COMMENTS: It is a beauty that has all the charm and grace of its English counterpart! At first glance one would think that this plate with its blue and white transfer was made by a Staffordshire English pottery company, however when one looks at its back stamp one is surprised to see that it is of Japanese origin; although it has a Late Victorian appearance, it dates 1940’s.
This plate could set comfortably in any Staffordshire Transferware Collection and no one would suspect the difference. Only when one turns the plate over and reads the back stamp, does he realize that this is not a Staffordshire transferware plate.
CONDITION: Excellent! There are no chips, no cracks, no stains, no fork or knife scratches, or restoration.
